Released by Jaleco in 1983, Exerion is an early vertical shooter for the Sega SG-1000 that stands out for its fast-paced action and distinctive pseudo-3D parallax backgrounds. You pilot a starship defending against alien forces that attack in sweeping, bird-like formations. A key strategic element is managing your dual weapon system: you have slow, unlimited shots and a powerful, rapid-fire machine gun that requires you to collect ammo by destroying enemies.
How to play
Your objective is to survive the diving enemy waves and achieve the highest score possible. Use the Arrow Keys to move your ship. Press Z to fire your slow, unlimited dual cannons, and X for your rapid-fire machine gun, which drains your ammo reserve. Press Enter to start or reset the game.
Tips
- Rely on your slow dual cannons for smaller, isolated enemies to build up your rapid-fire ammo.
- Save your rapid-fire machine gun for dense, overwhelming waves or when enemies cluster at the bottom of the screen.
- Because enemy formations follow predictable sweeping arcs, positioning yourself early where their flight paths intersect makes them much easier to clear.
