DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Black Label (2002) is a legendary vertical bullet hell shoot ’em up developed by Cave for the arcades. As an updated revision of the original DaiOuJou, this version brings refined scoring mechanics, adjusted difficulty, and allows players to face the punishing second loop outright. You select from two fighter ships and pair them with an Element Doll, which determines your ship’s movement speed and bomb capacity. The game is celebrated for its demanding tight-pattern dodging and aggressive chaining system, requiring both precision and memorization.
How to play
Your objective is to survive dense curtains of enemy fire while maintaining your hit chain for a high score. Insert a coin using Shift and press Enter to start. Use the Arrow Keys to maneuver your ship. Press Z to fire your standard spread shot, or hold it to emit a concentrated laser that slows your movement for tight dodging. Press X to use a screen-clearing bomb or activate a Hyper.
Tips
- Your ship’s hitbox is extremely small, located only in the brightly colored center of the craft. Focus your eyes on that spot and the immediate bullets around it rather than the whole screen.
- Switching to your laser (holding Z) drastically slows your ship, which is essential for making micro-dodges through the game’s dense bullet patterns.
- Don’t hoard your bombs. If you find yourself trapped, use a bomb (X) to save your lifeโlosing a life also depletes your bomb stock.
