The Death and Return of Superman is a side-scrolling beat ’em up developed by Blizzard Entertainment for the Sega Genesis in 1994. The game follows DC Comics’ 1992–93 storyline in full: Superman’s fatal clash with Doomsday, the emergence of replacement heroes — The Eradicator, Steel, and Superboy — and the Man of Steel’s eventual return. Each character handles differently, so the campaign changes in pace and power as the story moves through them.
How to play
Fight through side-scrolling stages, clearing enemies with attacks and super powers before reaching each chapter’s boss. Flight is central — hold Up to rise and move aerially, which keeps you clear of ground hazards and lets you reposition between hits. Keyboard controls: arrow keys to move and fly, X (Genesis B) to attack, Z (Genesis C) for the secondary attack, S (Genesis A) for a special move, Enter to pause or start, Shift for Mode.
Tips
- Stay airborne as much as possible — most ground enemies cannot reach you at full height, and aerial movement is faster than walking through packed screens.
- Steel hits the hardest but commits the longest after each swing. Against bosses, land one or two hits and back off rather than following through to the animation’s end.
- Superboy recovers the fastest and rewards consistent pressure; The Eradicator’s ranged energy attacks are useful when enemies cluster or when you want to stay outside melee range.
