Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine is a 1993 puzzle game for the Sega Genesis, published by Sega. It is a Western reskin of Compile’s Puyo Puyo, set in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe: Robotnik has outlawed music and fun across Mobius, and his Mean Bean Machine converts the colorful Meanies into robotic henchmen. Your job is to duel through twelve of his lackeys and shut the machine down.
How to play
Pairs of colored beans fall from the top of your well. Slide them left or right and rotate to place them where you need. When four or more beans of the same color connect — horizontally or vertically — they vanish. Clearing beans sends gray garbage beans onto your opponent’s board, shrinking their space. First player to have their column blocked at the top loses. A two-player versus mode is also available for head-to-head play.

Tips
- Chain combos send far more garbage than single clears. When popped beans fall and trigger another group of four, that is a chain. Even a two-chain makes a significant difference in later duels.
- Keep the board flat. A tall tower on one side leaves fewer spots for awkward pairs. Spread your placements so both sides stay roughly even.
- Watch the next-pair preview. The upcoming pair is always shown. When the board gets crowded, plan your current drop with the next pair already in mind.
