Released in 1982 by Sega, Zaxxon is a groundbreaking arcade space shooter and one of the first games to feature an isometric projection perspective. Piloting a fighter spacecraft, you navigate through a heavily defended floating fortress, blasting enemy turrets, dodging force fields, and engaging in deep-space dogfights. Its unique angled viewpoint creates a true sense of three-dimensional depth, allowing you to change your ship’s altitude to avoid walls and accurately target ground installations.
How to Play
Your primary objective is to survive the gauntlet of enemy defenses and defeat the heavily armored Zaxxon robot at the end of the stage. Because your ship constantly consumes fuel, you must destroy enemy fuel tanks scattered along the ground to replenish your reserves. Use the on-screen altimeter on the left side to judge your height relative to incoming walls and force fields.
Controls
- Insert Coin: 5
- Start: 1
- Move: Arrow Keys (Up/Down controls altitude)
- Fire: Space, Z, or X
Tips
- Manage your altitude: Keep a close eye on the altimeter. Flying too low will cause you to crash into ground structures, while flying too high exposes you to homing missiles.
- Conserve fuel: Prioritize shooting fuel drums. Running out of fuel results in an immediate loss of a life, so risk destroying a few ground targets even if the area is heavily fortified.
- Defeating Zaxxon: When you reach the boss, match its altitude and fire rapidly into its vulnerable missile launcher while dodging incoming projectiles.
