Zanac is a classic vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up developed by Compile and released for the NES in 1986. It is highly regarded for its unique artificial intelligence system, which dynamically adjusts the enemy spawn rates and attack patterns based on your play style. The more aggressively you play and the more powerful your weapons become, the harder the game pushes back. You pilot the AFX-6502-Zanac space fighter through twelve intense stages to stop the System, an organic intelligence that has turned against humanity.
How to play
Your objective is to survive each stage and defeat the boss at the end of the level, or outlast the timer on the enemy bases. Collect numbered power-ups (0 through 7) to equip and upgrade different secondary weapons, such as directional shields or laser blasts. Grab the round chips to upgrade your main blaster. The default NES controls mapped in the browser are:
- Arrow Keys: Move your ship
- Z or X: Fire main weapon
- X or Z: Fire secondary weapon
- Enter: Pause the game
Tips
- Manage the AI: The game’s AI gets more difficult if you fire your main weapon constantly. Only shoot when necessary to keep the enemy count manageable.
- Upgrade smartly: Collecting the same numbered sub-weapon multiple times upgrades it to its maximum power. The ‘0’ weapon (an expanding shot) is excellent for clearing waves and blocking enemy fire.
- Destroy enemy bases quickly: At the end of most stages, you face fortresses with multiple cores. Destroying the cores before the timer runs out prevents them from escaping and earns you massive points.
