Ys (originally known as Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished) is a landmark action RPG developed by Nihon Falcom, with this 1988 NES port bringing the classic adventure to an 8-bit console. Fully playable in English via a fan translation by David Mullen, you play as the red-haired swordsman Adol Christin on a quest to recover the six Books of Ys. The game is famous for pioneering the action RPG genre and features an iconic, fast-paced combat system that sets it apart from turn-based contemporaries.
How to Play
Your objective is to explore the land of Esteria, gathering equipment and leveling up to conquer dungeons and find the Books of Ys. Combat uses the signature “bump system”: instead of pressing an attack button, you deal damage by physically running into enemies. The standard NES controls apply in the browser: use the Arrow Keys to move Adol, and Z/X combined with Enter/Shift for menu navigation and selecting items.
Tips
To succeed in combat without taking heavy damage, never run into an enemy directly face-to-head. Instead, approach them slightly off-center so you strike their side or back. Also, be sure to grind a few levels in the fields outside the starting town before venturing into the first dungeon, as early enemies can be surprisingly deadly.
