Released in 1993 by Tonkin House for the SNES, Ys IV: Mask of the Sun is an action RPG that returns to the series’ roots. Continuing the adventures of Adol Christin, this entry brings back the signature “bump combat” system from the first two games, where players attack enemies by ramming into them. This version is fully playable in English thanks to the Aeon Genesis translation patch, allowing you to explore the land of Celceta and uncover the mysteries of its winged civilization.
How to Play
The core of the game is its fast-paced, bump-based action combat and dungeon exploration. Your goal is to guide Adol through Celceta, finding equipment, leveling up, and defeating bosses. Because there is no dedicated attack button, combat relies entirely on your positioning.
- Movement (D-pad): Arrow keys
- Confirm / Talk (A): X
- Cancel / Magic (B): Z
- Menu (X): S
- Start / Pause: Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Off-center attacking: Never bump into enemies directly head-on, or you will take damage. Always align Adol so he hits them slightly off-center to attack safely.
- Heal by standing still: In most outdoor areas, Adol will slowly regenerate health if you stand completely still. Use this to safely recover after tough fights.
