Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished – The Final Chapter is a classic action RPG originally developed by Nihon Falcom, released for the NES in 1990. Picking up immediately after the events of the first game, you once again guide the red-haired swordsman Adol Christin. This version features the English translation by David Mullen, allowing you to fully enjoy the story and dialogue in this defining 8-bit adventure.
How to Play
Continue Adol’s quest to uncover the secrets of the ancient land of Ys. The game famously uses the “bump combat” system: you attack enemies by simply running into them. To avoid taking damage, ensure you strike enemies off-center or from the sides and back rather than head-on. Ys II also introduces a magic system, giving Adol projectile attacks and utility spells. Use the Arrow Keys to move, Z and X for your NES A and B buttons (used for magic and items), and Enter / Shift for Start and Select.
Tips
- Master the off-center bump: Always try to hit enemies so you are slightly misaligned with them. Hitting them dead-center will cause you to take damage.
- Return to the clinic: Early in the game, the clinic in Lance Village is your best way to heal. Don’t venture too far until you’ve gained a couple of levels.
- Talk to everyone: The world is full of NPCs who provide crucial hints and items necessary to progress the story.
