Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, released for the NES in 1987, is a foundational 3D dungeon-crawling RPG. You assemble a party of up to six custom adventurers and descend into a punishing, grid-based labyrinth. Your ultimate goal is to survive the grueling depths, reach the bottom floor, and defeat the evil wizard Werdna to recover a stolen amulet for Trebor, the Mad Overlord.
Navigate the maze and engage in challenging turn-based combat to level up your characters. For this NES release, use the Arrow keys to move through the dungeon, Z to confirm actions in menus, X to cancel, Enter to start, and Shift for Select.
Early on, survival requires extreme caution. Stay close to the first floor’s stairs to safely grind for experience and gold, returning to town frequently to rest and heal. Because the dungeon features teleporters, dark zones, and pit traps, drawing your own map on grid paper is one of the best ways to avoid getting lost.
