Wizardry I – Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a dungeon-crawling role-playing game, playable here in a 2001 Game Boy Color port released in Japan. The original was designed by Andrew Greenberg and Robert Woodhead for Sir-Tech in 1981, and it’s one of the earliest first-person dungeon crawlers in the genre — a game that went on to directly inspire early Japanese RPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. This version brings that same foundational design to a handheld screen.
How to Play
You build and lead a party of up to six adventurers, drawn from different races and classes, down into a ten-level maze beneath the town of Llylgamyn. Combat is turn-based and happens in first-person as you explore corridor by corridor, with no automap to lean on. Between dives you return to town to buy gear and spells and to visit the Temple to heal or resurrect anyone who fell below. The goal is to reach the bottom of the dungeon and defeat the wizard Werdna to recover the stolen amulet.
Controls: D-pad to move and turn, A to confirm, B to cancel, Start and Select for menus — mapped in the browser to the arrow keys, Z, X, Enter, and Shift.
Tips
- Build a balanced party — fighters and other melee classes up front, spellcasters protected in the back rows.
- Return to town and the Temple often. Character death isn’t always permanent, but resurrection can fail, so don’t push a wounded party deeper than it can survive.
- Keep track of the maze as you go; there’s no in-game map, and the dungeon includes traps and teleporters that can easily get an unprepared party lost.
