Game description:

Wipeout 64 is a futuristic anti-gravity racing game developed by Psygnosis and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. Set in the year 2098, it builds on the high-speed foundation of the series with analog control support and intense four-player split-screen multiplayer. Players pilot sleek hovercrafts for various racing teams, navigating twisting, futuristic circuits while battling rival pilots using a wide array of offensive and defensive weapons.

How to Play

Your objective is to finish first in each race while surviving attacks from opponents. Navigating the tracks requires carefully managing your ship’s momentum and using airbrakes to take sharp corners without losing speed. For the Nintendo 64, the default controls map the analog stick or D-pad (arrow keys in your browser) to steering, the A button (Z key) to accelerate, and the B button (X key) to fire weapons. The L and R shoulder buttons (often mapped to Q and W or Shift keys) are essential for operating your left and right airbrakes.

Tips

  • Master the airbrakes: The key to maintaining top speed on tight corners is tapping the left or right airbrake rather than letting off the accelerator entirely.
  • Strategic weapon use: Learn the tracks to anticipate chokepoints. Dropping mines in narrow passages or saving your shield for highly contested straights can secure your lead.
  • Pitch control: Adjusting your ship’s nose up or down during jumps and drops helps maintain a smooth racing line and prevents speed loss on hard landings.
