Whomp’Em is a 1991 action-platformer developed by Jaleco for the NES. Players control a Native American boy named Soaring Eagle on a quest to gather magical totems. Drawing heavy inspiration from the Mega Man series, the game allows you to choose the order in which you tackle its stages. As you defeat each boss, you acquire their unique weapon to add to your arsenal, which often serves as a specific weakness for other bosses.
How to Play
Your primary weapon is a spear that can be thrust in multiple directions. Use the Arrow keys to move and press Z to jump and X to attack. Enter pauses the game. A crucial technique is the downward thrustโwhile jumping, hold Down and press attack to bounce off enemies and obstacles, much like in Zelda II.
Tips
- Test your newly acquired boss weapons on different enemies; finding the right elemental weakness makes boss fights significantly easier.
- Master the downward pogo thrust early, as many later platforming sections require you to bounce off enemies to cross large gaps.
- Collect the magic gourds scattered throughout the levels to increase your maximum health for the final challenges.
