Instead of a racing game, Wacky Races (1992) is a creative 2D platformer for the NES developed by Atlus. You play as the villainous sidekick Muttley on a mission to rescue Dick Dastardly, exploring three unique worlds to battle the other classic cartoon racers.
How to play
Muttley’s default attack is a very short-range bite, but the game shines through a Gradius-style power-up system. Collecting bones advances a cursor at the bottom of the screen, allowing you to activate different abilities by pressing Select. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move, A (X key) to jump, and B (Z key) to bite or use weapons. Start (Enter) pauses the game, and Select (Shift) activates your chosen power-up.
Tips
- Prioritise the Sonic Bark or Bombs: Muttley’s default bite has very poor range. Focus on collecting bones early to equip a projectile attack as soon as possible.
- Use the Tail Spin for distance: The winged power-up allows Muttley to glide by spinning his tail, which is essential for clearing long gaps and bypassing tricky platforming sections.
- Max out your health: The heart power-up not only restores your health but can increase your maximum health up to six hearts, making boss fights significantly easier.
