Game description:

U.N. Squadron is an intense side-scrolling shoot ’em up developed by Capcom and released for the SNES in 1991. Based on the manga Area 88, you step into the cockpit as a mercenary fighter pilot taking on a heavily armed terrorist organization. Unlike many contemporary arcade shooters, the game incorporates RPG-like elements, allowing you to earn cash from destroyed enemies and successful missions to purchase advanced aircraft and specialized secondary weapons between stages.

How to Play

Your objective is to survive waves of enemy fighters, ground forces, and massive boss vehicles across various combat zones. Use the D-pad (mapped to your arrow keys) to maneuver your aircraft. Press B or Y (Z or X keys) to fire your primary vulcan cannons, and A or X (S or A keys) to launch the special weapons you’ve equipped. Start (Enter) pauses the game. Instead of one-hit deaths, taking damage puts your plane into a vulnerable “danger” state; sustaining another hit while in this state destroys your plane, but avoiding damage for a short period restores your ship’s stability.

Tips

  • Focus your early funds on upgrading to an aircraft that supports better special weapons, such as the F-14 Tomcat or the A-10 Thunderbolt, rather than hoarding weak munitions.
  • Don’t be afraid to use your special weapons during tough stretches of a level; you can often replenish them by destroying specific colored supply planes.
  • Watch your damage meter carefullyโ€”if you are hit and enter the flashing danger state, prioritize evasion over attacking until your plane recovers.
