Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is the 1997 first-person shooter Iguana Entertainment built for the Nintendo 64, published by Acclaim. It casts you as Tal’Set, a Native American warrior charged with keeping the eight scattered pieces of the ancient Chronoscepter out of the hands of the tyrannical Campaigner, who plans to use it to tear down the barrier separating the primeval Lost Land from the rest of the universe. This German Rev A release was altered to satisfy the country’s content laws of the time: human enemies are swapped for robotic stand-ins, red blood is replaced with purple smoke, and death animations are toned down rather than the violence being removed outright.
How to play
You fight your way through the Lost Land’s jungles, underwater caverns, catacombs, an ancient city, and finally the Campaigner’s fortress, gathering Chronoscepter fragments and an arsenal that runs from the starting Tek Bow up to the homing, skull-drilling Cerebral Bore. In the browser, movement and looking use the arrow keys, Z and X fire your equipped weapon and its alternate mode, and Enter serves as Start/Pause.
Tips
- The Tek Bow’s explosive arrows are a reliable early answer to tougher enemies before better weapons turn up.
- The N64 hardware’s draw-distance fog means enemies are often audible before they’re visible â listen for footsteps and calls to avoid ambushes.
- Save a fully assembled, charged Chronoscepter shot for the Campaigner himself; its blast radius is large enough to be dangerous to you too if fired while he’s close.
