Game description:

Released in Europe by Data East in 1991, Turbo Racing is the PAL rebrand of Al Unser Jr.’s Turbo Racing, dropping the American IndyCar driver’s name from the box while leaving the game itself unchanged. It’s a Formula One-style Grand Prix racer for the NES built around a 16-circuit World Grand Prix season, with each round run over ten laps to accumulate championship points.

How to play

Steer with Left/Right on the D-pad (arrow keys), accelerate with the A button (Z), and brake with B (X). Up shifts to the next gear and Down shifts down; holding Up while already in third gear, together with A, triggers a turbo boost that draws from a limited fuel supply you’ll need to top up once it runs out. Press Start (Enter) to begin or pause. Every race opens with a qualifying lap before the Grand Prix itself.

Tips

  • Spend your turbo freely during the qualifying lap — it doesn’t carry over into the race, so there’s no reason to save it.
  • Watch for the screen flashing pink; that’s your warning that turbo fuel is running low, so pace your boosts to avoid running dry mid-race.
  • Expect aggressive, crowded traffic right after the start of each Grand Prix — rival cars will push into your line, so pick your overtakes carefully instead of forcing your way through.
