Tom Sawyer no Bouken is a 1989 action-platformer developed by WinkySoft for the NES. Later released in North America as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the game takes place entirely within a dream after Tom falls asleep in his classroom, sending him on a surreal journey to rescue his crush, Becky, from Injun Joe. Instead of closely following Mark Twain’s classic novel, the adventure leans into the bizarre, forcing you to battle fantastical enemies like giant gorillas, octopuses, and dragons.
How to play
Your objective is to reach the end of each stage to save Becky. As Tom, your primary attack is throwing a limitless supply of rocks. The game features an unforgiving one-hit death systemโif you take damage, Tom immediately wakes up and loses a life. The controls use the standard NES layout: move with the D-pad (mapped to your arrow keys), jump with A (Z), and throw rocks with B (X). While most stages are traditional side-scrolling platformers, some sections switch gameplay styles entirely, introducing vertical scrolling or shoot-’em-up mechanics like rafting down a fast-moving river.
Tips
- Take your time and memorize enemy placements. The stiff jumping physics and one-hit deaths mean reckless forward movement will quickly deplete your lives.
- In the auto-scrolling shoot-’em-up segments, focus heavily on dodging rather than attacking, since fast-moving projectiles can easily catch you off guard.
