Game description:

Originally designed by Chris Roberts at Origin Systems, the action-RPG Times of Lore arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. It blends the expansive, continuous world of classic computer RPGs with fast-paced, real-time combat. Players choose between three classesโ€”Knight, Assassin, or Barbarianโ€”and set out to save the troubled kingdom of Albareth by recovering three magical artifacts. Unlike many RPGs of its era, there are no separate battle screens; exploration and fighting happen seamlessly on the same map.

How to Play

Your objective is to explore the kingdom, talk to NPCs to gather clues, and defeat monsters to survive. Use the arrow keys (D-pad) to move your character. Press Z (A button) to attack or interact with characters, and X (B button) to open the command menu to use items. Enter (Start) pauses the game, while Shift (Select) accesses your inventory and stats.

Tips

  • Take time to converse with everyone you meet. In this game, keywords from conversations are essential for unlocking new dialogue options and progressing your quest.
  • Combat relies on careful positioning. Try to attack enemies from an angle where their counterattacks won’t easily hit you, rather than charging straight in.
  • Don’t wander too far from paths early on; the wilderness is dangerous and it’s easy to get overwhelmed before you have found better equipment.
