Game description:

Terranigma is a 1995 action-RPG from Quintet, the SNES developer also behind Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, published by Enix in Japan and by Nintendo across Europe. You play as Ark, a boy from Crysta, the sole village in an underground world, who accidentally unleashes catastrophe on a dead surface world and must set out to resurrect it — raising continents, restoring plant and animal life, and rebuilding human civilization from nothing. Often considered the unofficial third chapter of Quintet’s loosely connected “Heaven and Earth” games, it’s a cult favorite that never received an official North American release, since Enix had already closed its U.S. office by the time localization was finished.

How to Play

Combat is real-time: Ark strikes with his sword, and different techniques open up depending on whether he’s standing still, running, or jumping when he attacks. Beyond fighting, a large part of the game is exploring the world you’re reviving and delivering the inventions of scattered inventors so their ideas spread to every town, which is what causes the towns to actually grow and develop over the course of the game.

Gamepad control:

direction buttons

↑↓←→
attack (A) Z
jump (B) X
use equipped item (X) / hold to run (Y) A, S
talk / examine / open (L)   block (R) Q, E
SELECT (Pandora’s Box / items) Shift
START (pause) Enter

Tips

  • Talk to and examine everything (the L button, mapped to Q) — most of the sidequests that grow the world’s towns come from finding isolated inventors and carrying their inventions elsewhere, and it’s easy to miss them by rushing through.
  • Attacking while jumping or right after a dash triggers different sword techniques than a standstill attack, which makes a real difference against tougher enemies later on.
