Game description:

Developed by Pony Canyon and released in 1987, Tanigawa Kouji no Shougi Shinan II – Meijin e no Michi is a traditional board game and instructional Shogi title for the NES (Famicom Disk System). Hosted by professional Shogi champion Kouji Tanigawa, the game offers a comprehensive way to learn and practice Japanese chess through guided gameplay.

How to Play

The objective is to defeat your opponent by placing their king in checkmate. In addition to standard matches, the game features Tsumeshogi (checkmate puzzles) and Tsugi no Itte (next-move exercises) to help improve your strategy. You can navigate the board and select your pieces using the D-pad and A button (mapped to the arrow keys and Z key in your browser), using the B button (X key) to cancel selections.

Tips

  • Take advantage of the Tsumeshogi puzzles before diving into full matches; they are excellent for recognizing mating nets and improving your end-game calculation.
  • Pay close attention to piece drops, a unique mechanic in Shogi. A well-placed captured piece can instantly turn the tide of the game and create unexpected threats.
