Game description:

Tales of Phantasia is a landmark 1995 action role-playing game developed by Wolf Team and published by Namco for the Super Famicom. As the inaugural entry in the iconic Tales series, it follows swordsman Cress Albane on a time-traveling quest across past, present, and future eras to defeat the formidable sorcerer Dhaos. The game pushed the SNES hardware to its limits with real-time combat, detailed sprite animation, and full voice samples.

How to Play

Guide Cress and his companions across towns, overworlds, and dangerous dungeons while managing combat tactics and party equipment. Battles engage automatically upon enemy contact using the Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS), placing players in real-time 2D side-scrolling combat where timing, positioning, and special technique combinations are key.

Browser Controls (SNES Default)

  • D-Pad (Arrow Keys): Move character / Navigate menus
  • A / B (X / Z Keys): Confirm / Basic Attack & Sword Techniques
  • X / Y (S / A Keys): Open battle menu / Perform Artes
  • L / R (Q / E Keys): Switch target / Escape / Shortcut commands
  • Start (Enter): Pause / Main menu
  • Select (Right Shift): Toggle control modes

Tips for Victory

  • Master Manual Control: Switch Cress to Manual control in the tactics menu to directly execute thrusts, slashes, and aerial techniques rather than relying on auto-targeting.
  • Pause to Assign Magic Tactics: Open the pause menu mid-battle to issue direct spellcasting orders to Mint or Arche, prioritizing party healing and enemy elemental weaknesses.
  • Stock the Food Sack: Keep your Food Sack filled with ingredients to passively restore HP and TP while exploring long dungeons between major boss encounters.
