Taito Basketball (Japan), developed by Aicom and released for the NES in 1991, is the Japanese release of the sports simulation game known in North America as Ultimate Basketball. The game features full five-on-five gameplay where you choose from seven fictional teams to compete in single exhibition matches or a championship tournament. Unlike many basketball games of its era that focused on arcade-style action, it aims for a more traditional simulation approach while retaining accessible 8-bit controls.
How to Play
The objective is to outscore your opponent before the time runs out. On offense, use the D-pad to move your player around the court. Press A to pass the ball to a teammate. To shoot, press B once to jump, and press B a second time at the apex of your jump to release the ball. On defense, use the D-pad to move, press A to switch control to the defender closest to the ball, and press B to jump and attempt a block.
Tips
- Timing your shots is crucial; releasing the ball precisely at the peak of your player’s jump significantly increases your shooting accuracy.
- Use your jump strategically on defense. Swatting the ball at the right moment can block shots effectively, but mistiming it will leave your defender out of position and allow the offense an easy basket.
