Game description:

Released in 1989 for the NES, Sweet Home by Capcom is a groundbreaking psychological horror RPG that laid the foundation for the entire survival horror genre. Based on the Japanese film of the same name, the game follows a documentary crew of five who become trapped inside the haunted Mamiya mansion while attempting to restore its frescoes. Blending traditional turn-based RPG combat with intense resource management and permanent death for party members, it remains an incredibly tense and atmospheric masterpiece.

How to Play

You must explore the Mamiya mansion, solve puzzles to unlock new areas, and survive random encounters with grotesque spirits. Each of your five characters has a unique, essential item (like a lighter, camera, or medical kit), requiring you to split them into smaller teams to progress. The default NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move and navigate menus, press Z for the A button (confirm/interact) and X for the B button (cancel). Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Manage your inventory carefully; space is extremely limited and you can drop items anywhere in the mansion to pick them up later, which is often safer than carrying them all.
  • Keep your party members healed. Permanent death means losing access to a character’s unique ability, forcing you to find substitute items scattered around the house.
  • Use the Call command in battle if a single character is ambushed; nearby party members can rush in to join the fight and save them.
