Super Space Invaders (also known as Super Space Invaders ’91) brings Taito’s classic shoot ’em up formula to the Sega Master System with a major visual and gameplay overhaul. Released in 1991, this updated version goes beyond the original fixed shooter design by introducing power-ups, varied enemy movement patterns, and unique stages, including the memorable “cattle mutilation” bonus rounds where you must defend cows from being abducted by alien saucers.
How to Play
Your objective is to destroy wave after wave of descending alien invaders before they reach the bottom of the screen. Move your ship left and right to dodge incoming fire, and shoot back to clear the formations. Pick up the capsules dropped by special UFOs to upgrade your weapons with rapid fire, lasers, or spread shots. The game can be played in the browser using the standard Sega Master System controls: move your ship with the arrow keys, and fire using the Z or X keys. Press Enter to start the game.
Tips
- Prioritise shooting the UFOs that fly across the top of the screen; the power-ups they drop are essential for surviving the faster, more aggressive later waves.
- During the “cattle mutilation” bonus stages, focus on the descending saucers rather than moving randomly. Keep your fire concentrated to prevent them from carrying away the cows.
- Use the destructible shields strategically. You can shoot through them from below to create a safe firing gap without leaving yourself completely exposed to enemy lasers.
