Game description:

Developed by Koei and released in 1992, Super Mahjong Taikai is a traditional Japanese riichi mahjong game for the Super Famicom. The title distinguishes itself from standard mahjong simulators by pitting players against famous historical figures from across world history, combining classic four-player tile matching with Koei’s signature historical flair.

How to Play

The objective is to build a winning hand of 14 tiles (four melds and a pair) faster than your opponents, scoring points based on the complexity and value of your hand (yaku). In the browser, use the Arrow keys to navigate your tiles and menus, press X (A button) to draw, discard, or confirm selections, and use Z (B button) to cancel actions.

Tips

Keep a close eye on your opponents’ discards (the pond) to deduce which tiles they might be waiting for, reducing your risk of dealing into their winning hands. If you are a beginner, focus on keeping your hand closed (not claiming tiles from others) so you can declare “riichi” when you are one tile away from winning, which adds extra points and unlocks hidden scoring potential (ura dora).
