Game description:

Super Earth Defense Force (also known as Super E.D.F.) is a classic 1991 horizontal shoot ’em up developed by Jaleco for the SNES. You pilot the XA-1 space fighter in a desperate battle to save Earth from the invading Azyma Empire. What sets this shooter apart is its weapon systemโ€”you select your main weapon type before launch, and your ship is accompanied by two satellite “options” whose formation can be switched on the fly to adapt to incoming enemy waves.

How to play

Your objective is to survive waves of enemy fighters and defeat the massive bosses waiting at the end of each stage. For SNES games played in the browser, the default controls typically map the D-pad to the arrow keys for movement. Use the Z and X keys (acting as the A and B buttons) to fire your weapons and cycle through your satellite option formations. Press Enter (Start) to pause or begin the game.

Tips

  • Experiment with weapons: You cannot change your primary weapon mid-stage, so try different types (like Vulcan or Homing) to see which best suits your playstyle and the upcoming level.
  • Manage your options: Switching your satellites from a focused forward attack to a wider spread or defensive formation is crucial for surviving crowded screens.
  • Collect power-ups safely: Enemies drop items that upgrade your weapon’s level; prioritize gathering these, but don’t risk a life doing so.
