Released in 1993 for the Super Famicom, Super Air Diver (known as Lock On in North America) is a combat flight simulator that puts players in the cockpit of modern fighter jets. Using the console’s Mode 7 graphics to simulate 3D airspace, the game tasks you with managing throttle, radar, and weapon systems to engage enemy squadrons in fast-paced aerial dogfights.
How to Play
Your objective is to locate enemy aircraft on your radar, lock onto them, and shoot them down before your shields are depleted. Keep an eye on your fuel and damage meters during combat.
- Arrow Keys (D-pad): Pitch and roll your fighter.
- Z / X (B / A): Fire vulcan cannons and heat-seeking missiles.
- A / S (Y / X): Decrease or increase your throttle.
- Enter (Start): Pause the game.
Tips for Dogfighting
- Manage Your Speed: Flying at maximum throttle constantly makes you an easier target. Slowing down allows you to make tighter turns and keep agile enemies in your sights.
- Use the Radar: Rely on the radar screen to track incoming bogeys. If an enemy gets behind you, execute a sharp loop or brake to force them to overshoot.
- Conserve Missiles: Heat-seeking missiles are limited. Wait for a solid lock-on tone before firing, and use your vulcan cannons for close-range engagements.
