Submarine Commander is a 1982 first-person action and simulator game developed by Atari and released exclusively under the Sears Tele-Games label for the Atari 2600. Playing from the perspective of a submarine captain looking through a rotating periscope, you must monitor your gaugesโincluding radar, sonar, and fuelโwhile hunting down enemy vessels on the horizon.
How to play
Your objective is to sink as many enemy ships as possible before your fuel runs out or your submarine is destroyed. Rotate your periscope to locate targets on the radar, then align your crosshairs to fire torpedoes. In advanced game variations, enemy ships will fight back by dropping depth charges, which you must evade to survive.
- Move periscope / Steer: Arrow keys
- Fire torpedo: Spacebar
- Select game variation: F11
- Start / Reset: F12
Tips
- Watch your gauges closely; tracking your fuel level is just as important as lining up your shots.
- When enemy ships drop depth charges, listen for the audio cues and use the directional indicator to quickly move out of the blast radius.
- Lead your targets slightly when firing, as torpedoes take time to travel to vessels further out on the horizon.
