Game description:

Released in North America in June 1989, Street Cop is Bandai’s NES entry in the Family Trainer series, built for the Power Pad mat. It began life in Japan in 1987 as Family Trainer: Manhattan Police, the sixth game in the series, developed by Sonata (later known as Human Entertainment). You play rookie officer Little Ben, patrolling six Manhattan-styled stages and working your way up to arresting six wanted criminals.

Each stage runs on a 10-minute clock. Track your target’s position on the stage map, then chase them down through streets, warehouses, and skyscrapers, taking out their cohorts along the way before confronting the main criminal. Originally played by stepping on the Power Pad mat, browser emulation maps those inputs to standard NES controls: Arrow keys for the D-pad, Z and X for the A and B buttons, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select. As with the mat, alternate your movement keys quickly to build running speed.

Tips:

  • Ramming a criminal at full speed knocks them down more reliably than clubbing them one-on-one.
  • Club suspicious trash cans instead of running past them — enemies often hide inside and ambush you if left alone.
  • Watch for open sewer covers as you chase; stepping in one costs you time you can’t spare against the 10-minute clock.
