Starmaster is a pioneering first-person space combat simulator released by Activision for the Atari 2600 in 1982. Rather than a simple arcade shooter, it blends action with strategy and resource management. Piloting a starfighter, you must defend four starbases from an invading fleet across a 36-sector galactic grid. You navigate using a map screen, warp through meteor fields, and engage enemy fighters in intense cockpit combat while carefully monitoring your ship’s energy and damage.
How to Play
Your objective is to destroy all enemy fighters before they destroy your four starbases. You switch between the Galactic Chart and the cockpit view using the console’s Color/B&W switch (mapped to F2). From the map, choose a sector containing enemies and initiate a warp, dodging meteors along the way. In combat, you must lead your targets and shoot down incoming fire. Everything you do drains energy; warp to a starbase sector and dock to repair damaged systems (like lasers or shields) and refuel.

Tips
- Prioritize bases in danger: Check the map frequently. Enemies slowly move toward your starbases, and losing all four ends the game.
- Warp efficiently: Warping consumes energy based on distance. Clear adjacent sectors to save fuel, and always ensure you have enough energy left to reach a starbase for refueling.
