Game description:

Star Ocean is a 1996 action role-playing game for the Super Famicom, developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix. It was tri-Ace’s debut title, made by a team of former Wolf Team staff who left after working on Tales of Phantasia. Released only in Japan, the game never got an official English version until Square Enix’s 2007 PSP remake — this release instead uses DeJap Translations’ widely praised fan translation patch (v1.0), which brings almost the entire script into English. The story follows Ratix Ferrence, Mils, and Dorn Marto, three young watchmen on the planet Roak who investigate a spreading petrification plague and discover it is a bioweapon unleashed by an alien race, eventually traveling 300 years into the past to confront its source.

How to Play

Battles play out in real time from an isometric view: you directly control one party member while the AI handles the other three, and you can pause to issue commands or swap who you’re controlling. Outside of combat, keep an eye out for Private Actions — optional scenes where party members split off to explore town on their own. These are easy to miss, are tied to specific points in the story, and shape character relationships as well as which ending you get. The Item Creation system lets you combine ingredients into weapons and equipment stronger than anything sold in shops, and Special Points let you grow each character’s skills over time.

Default SNES controls in the browser: Arrow Keys move the D-pad, Z is the A button, X is the B button, A and S are the X and Y buttons, Q and E are the L and R shoulder buttons, Enter is Start, and Shift is Select.

Tips

  • Walk around town and talk to everyone whenever you arrive at a new area — Private Action scenes are time-limited and can’t be replayed once you leave.
  • Save your money for Item Creation ingredients rather than store-bought gear; a well-timed crafted weapon or armor piece can outclass anything available to buy for your current point in the game.
