Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti (also known as SD Splatterhouse) is a lighthearted action-platformer released by Namco for the NES (Famicom) in 1989. A spin-off of the notoriously gory arcade series, this game trades realistic horror for a super-deformed, comical art style. You play as Rick, who is revived from the grave to rescue his girlfriend Jennifer from the evil Pumpkin King, battling through levels filled with parodies of classic horror films like Alien and The Fly.

How to Play

Your goal is to hack and slash your way to the end of each stage, defeating bosses to progress. Instead of the typical 2×4 piece of wood, Rick’s main weapon is a meat cleaver, and you can occasionally find a shotgun for ranged attacks. For the browser-based NES emulator, use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to jump, and X to attack. Press Enter to start or pause the game.

Tips

• Defeating enemies yields experience orbs. Collect enough of these to increase your maximum health bar.
• Keep an eye out for hidden doors that blend into the background scenery; these often lead to secret rooms containing health-restoring items or extra lives.
