Released in 1985 for the arcade, Space Invasion is a unique piece of run-and-gun history. Developed by Capcom, it is actually a modified European version of their legendary hit Commando, specifically altered for the German market to comply with censorship laws. Instead of fighting human soldiers, you play as a lone operative dropping behind enemy lines to battle an endless army of hostile cyborgs. The game retains the intense vertical shooting action, challenging level design, and iconic top-down perspective that made the original release a genre-defining staple.
How to Play
Your objective is to advance vertically through enemy territory, eliminating the cyborg army and rescuing prisoners of war. You have unlimited submachine gun ammo and a limited supply of grenades for clearing out entrenched enemies and vehicles.
- Movement: Arrow Keys to run in eight directions.
- Shoot: Z key to fire your submachine gun.
- Grenade: X key to throw a grenade.
- Coin / Start: Shift to insert a coin, Enter to start.
Tips
- Keep moving: Enemy fire is dense, and standing still makes you an easy target. Always strafe while firing to dodge incoming bullets.
- Save your grenades: Use your limited grenades strategically to take out enemies hiding behind sandbags, walls, or in bunkers where your regular gun can’t reach them.
- Watch your back: Cyborg enemies will frequently spawn from the bottom of the screen or emerge from doors you have already passed.
