Game description:

Sonic the Hedgehog (Unl) for the SNES is one of the most infamous bootleg games of the 16-bit era. Developed by the Peruvian group Twin Eagles Group, this unlicensed platformer is actually an extensive ROM hack of Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos. The creators swapped Speedy out for Sonic, replacing his sprites with assets ripped from the Sega Genesis, while leaving the core engine and level design intact. The result is a bizarre but fascinating piece of gaming history where Sega’s mascot runs through levels originally designed for a Looney Tunes character.

How to Play

The objective remains the same as the Speedy Gonzales original: you must navigate through the stages, collect rings (which replaced the original cheese items), and rescue captured characters. In a famously weird twist, instead of rescuing mice, Sonic must break open cages to free a captive Mario, who will jump and shout his own name when liberated.

  • D-pad / Arrow Keys: Move Sonic left, right, and duck.
  • B / X Key: Jump.
  • Y / Z Key: Hold to sprint, or press it to use your kick/dash attack to defeat enemies and break open cages.
  • Start / Enter: Pause the game.

Tips

  • Master the Dash Attack: Sonic doesn’t always defeat enemies by jumping on them in this hack; you must often use the attack button (inherited from Speedy Gonzales) to kick enemies and open Mario’s cages.
  • Expect Quirks: Because it is an unpolished bootleg, the game is notorious for bugs and is known to freeze after completing certain levels (typically after the fourth zone), depending on the emulator core you are using.
