This is the European (v1.1) release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Master System, an 8-bit platformer developed by Aspect and published by Sega in 1992 that is a genuinely different game from its 16-bit Genesis namesake, with its own zones, level layouts, and boss fights. Tails is kidnapped by Dr. Robotnik right at the start, so Sonic sets off solo, spin-dashing and jumping his way through seven distinct Zones to track him down.
How to Play
Clear each Zone’s three Acts and beat Dr. Robotnik’s boss machine to move on. There are no Special Stages in this version — the six Chaos Emeralds are hidden directly inside the regular levels, and finding all of them is what unlocks the good ending where Tails is freed. Move with the Arrow Keys, and press Z or X (Master System Buttons 1 and 2) to jump and curl into a spin to attack enemies.
Gameplay Tips
- Spin dash from a standstill: hold Down and tap the jump button repeatedly to charge a spin dash, then release Down to launch — much faster than a running start through the loops and tight corridors of zones like Green Hills.
- Don’t skip a zone’s Emerald: each Chaos Emerald is tucked away in a Zone’s levels, and the final Crystal Egg Zone only opens up once you’ve collected all six, so backtrack before the end if you’re missing one.
- Bring a second player: plugging in a second controller lets a friend take manual control of the normally AI-driven Tails, who has unlimited lives and can’t trigger a game over — handy for scouting ahead to emerald hiding spots.
