Game description:

Side Pocket is a classic pocket billiards simulator released for the NES in 1987. Originally an arcade hit by Data East, this console version challenges players to sink balls in standard pocket play while racking up enough points to progress through increasingly difficult cities. It stands out from early pool games by featuring a precise aiming line and a satisfying physics model that captures the feel of the felt.

How to Play

The main objective is to clear the table of balls before you run out of shots, earning a set number of points to qualify for the next city. Control your cue using the arrow keys (D-pad) to aim, press Z (A button) to set your shot power via the moving meter, and use X (B button) to apply English (spin) to the cue ball for advanced positioning. Press Enter (Start) to begin or pause the game.

Tips

  • Master the spin: Applying backspin stops the cue ball after a shot, while topspin makes it follow the object ball, helping you stay in position for your next move.
  • Target the flashing pockets: Sinking a ball into a flashing pocket awards bonus points or extra shots, which are vital for surviving the later stages.
  • Pace your power: Hitting every shot at maximum power makes the cue ball bounce wildly; use just enough force to sink the ball and maintain control.
