Side Pocket is a billiards game developed and published by Data East for the NES in 1987. Played from a top-down view of a pool table, the objective each stage is to pocket every ball while reaching a minimum point threshold — a blend of sport and puzzle-style strategy.
How to Play
Use the arrow keys to rotate the aiming line around the cue ball. Hold X to charge shot power — the longer you hold, the harder the hit — then release to fire. Before shooting, press Z to apply English (spin) that curves the cue ball’s path after contact. You must pocket all the balls on the table and meet the stage’s score target to advance; potting two or more balls in a single shot builds your score fastest. Trick shot bonus rounds appear between stages for extra scoring opportunities. Press Enter to start a new game.
Tips
- Combo shots are essential. Pocketing two or more balls per shot multiplies your score quickly. On later stages the minimum threshold is difficult to reach any other way, so plan your run order before you shoot.
- Use spin to control the cue ball. When a straight shot would leave the cue ball near a pocket or out of position, a touch of English (press Z before shooting) can redirect it to a safer landing spot.
- Don’t rush the trick shot rounds. The aiming window is more forgiving than it looks — line up carefully rather than guessing, and aim for the centre of the highlighted zone.
