Game description:

Shin 4 Nin Uchi Mahjong: Yakuman Tengoku is a traditional four-player riichi mahjong game released exclusively for the NES in Japan in 1991. As a continuation of Nintendo’s earlier mahjong titles, it offers a faithful digital recreation of the classic tabletop game, focusing on authentic rules and scoring hands (yakuman). Players compete against three AI opponents in standard matches, making strategic tile discards and calls to build winning hands.

How to play

The objective is to assemble a complete hand of 14 tiles (four melds and a pair) faster than your opponents to score points. To play in the browser, use the Arrow Keys to navigate your tiles and menu options, press Z (mapped to the A button) to select or discard a tile, and X (mapped to the B button) to cancel an action. Press Enter (Start) to begin the game or pause.

Tips

  • Always pay attention to the discards of your opponents (the “pond”) to avoid dealing into their hands, especially if someone has declared Riichi.
  • Familiarize yourself with standard Japanese mahjong hands (yaku) such as Tanyao (all simples) or Pinfu, as you must have at least one valid yaku to win a round.
