Game description:

Shanghai for the NES is a 1987 adaptation of the classic Mahjong Solitaire tile-matching puzzle game. Players are presented with a layered formation of 144 Mahjong tiles and must carefully dismantle the stack by finding and removing matching pairs. It requires strategic thinking to avoid trapping necessary tiles underneath others.

How to Play

The objective is to clear the entire board by matching pairs of identical tiles. A tile can only be selected if it is “free”โ€”meaning it has no other tile on top of it and is unobstructed on either its left or right side. Match all 144 tiles to win.

Controls:

  • D-pad (Arrow Keys): Move the cursor
  • A Button (Z): Select a tile
  • B Button (X): Cancel selection
  • Start (Enter): Pause the game

Tips

  • Focus on the outer edges and peaks: Prioritize removing tiles that unlock the most new options underneath or beside them.
  • Beware of four-of-a-kind: There are four of each tile in the game. If you can see all four available, match them safely, but be careful not to trap the last pair under a match you just made.
