Game description:

Shadowgate is a first-person point-and-click adventure developed by ICOM Simulations, released for the NES in 1987. Set entirely inside the cursed Castle Shadowgate, your goal is to stop the evil Warlock Lord before he summons the Behemoth — a demon capable of destroying the world. You explore the fortress room by room, collecting items and learning spells to work past its many traps and locked doors.

How to play

The interface is verb-based: select a command from the icon bar — Look, Take, Use, Open, Close, Hit — then apply it to an object in the scene or your inventory. Move the cursor with the arrow keys and confirm with X (the NES A button). Press Enter to open the pause menu, where you can save and load your progress.

One constraint shapes everything: your torch. It burns down continuously, and if it goes out you die in the dark. Managing your torch supply is as important as solving any puzzle.

Tips

  • Collect every torch you find. You will need several to finish the game — never pass one by.
  • Save after every solved puzzle. Shadowgate is notorious for its many instant-death traps; frequent saves prevent replaying long stretches.
  • Use Look on every item before using it. Item descriptions often contain clues essential for later puzzles, and some objects are irreplaceable if consumed at the wrong time.
