Secret of Mana is a legendary action RPG developed by Square and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993. Moving away from the traditional turn-based combat of the era, it introduced fluid, real-time battles alongside a revolutionary Ring Command system that let players pause the action to select spells and items. The game is also famous for its cooperative multiplayer, allowing up to three players to journey together to restore the balance of the Mana Tree.
How to Play
Your objective is to guide the hero and his two companions across a vast world, upgrading weapons and mastering magic to defeat the Mana Beast. The default SNES controls in the browser are mapped as follows: use the Arrow Keys to move, press Z for the A button (attack/confirm), and X for the B button (dash/cancel). Press S for the Y button to open your Ring Command menu, and A for the X button to open your companions’ menus. Start is mapped to Enter, and Select is mapped to Shift.
Tips
- Charge your attacks: Holding down the attack button charges your weapon gauge up to your current weapon level, unleashing a devastating strike when released.
- Level up magic efficiently: Magic levels up with use. Cast spells repeatedly in safe areas, especially at inns where you can easily restore your MP, to strengthen your elemental spirits before tough bosses.
- Manage the AI behavior: Use the Action Grid in the Ring Command menu to adjust how aggressive or defensive your AI companions are, keeping them from dying needlessly in boss fights.
