Game description:

Get ready for high-octane vehicular combat in this beta build of Rock n’ Roll Racing for the Super Nintendo. Developed by Silicon & Synapse (the studio that would later become Blizzard Entertainment), this isometric racer blends aggressive driving with an arsenal of mines, missiles, and spikes. This pre-release USA beta version offers a fascinating glimpse into the development of a 16-bit classic, letting you drift around tight corners while blowing away the competition to a legendary hard rock soundtrack.

How to play

The goal is to complete a set number of laps while surviving the onslaught of your opponents. Use your hard-earned winnings between races to upgrade your vehicle’s armor, engine, and weapons. In the browser, the standard SNES controls apply: use the arrow keys to steer your vehicle from the isometric perspective, the Z key to accelerate, the X key to fire your primary forward weapons, and the A key to drop mines or use defensive abilities.

Tips

  • Cornering is everything. Because of the isometric perspective, you need to turn slightly before you reach the corner to drift through it without hitting the guardrails.
  • Trailing behind at the start of a race lets you avoid the initial cluster of combat and pick off opponents with well-timed missiles.
  • Always prioritize upgrading your vehicle’s shocks and armor first, as surviving the chaotic races is often more important than raw speed.
