River City Ransom is a 1989 NES action game from Technos Japan Corp. — the studio behind Double Dragon — that layers RPG stat-building on top of side-scrolling brawling. You play as Alex, fighting through the gangs of River City to rescue a friend’s girlfriend from a crime boss named Slick.
How to Play
Every enemy you defeat drops coins. Spend them at shops around the city: food permanently raises your stats, books unlock new fighting techniques, and accessories give additional edges. Because stat boosts are permanent, your early purchases shape every fight that follows.
- Arrow keys — move
- Z — jump
- X — attack / pick up fallen enemies and weapons
- X (while holding an enemy) — throw
- Enter — START Shift — SELECT
Weapons enemies drop — chains, poles, rocks — deal more damage than bare fists. Tossing them into groups clears enemies faster than fighting one at a time.
Tips
- Prioritise food early; the permanent stat boosts compound across the whole run and outperform weapon pickups.
- Visit the bookstore and buy technique books — Stone Hands is among the first worth getting and noticeably increases damage output.
- When you knock an enemy down, pick them up and throw them into others to chain the damage rather than fighting one at a time.
