Rampart for the NES (released in 1992 by Jaleco) is a highly original blend of real-time puzzle and strategy mechanics, originally developed by Atari Games for the arcade. Players take command of a medieval territory under siege, alternating between frantic cannon battles against enemy fleets and urgent rebuild phases where defensive walls must be repaired using falling, Tetris-style blocks.
How to Play
Your objective is to keep at least one castle fully enclosed by walls at the end of every repair phase. When the battle phase begins, aim and fire your cannons to sink enemy ships before they can demolish your fortifications.
Controls: Use the Arrow keys to move the cursor or guide falling wall pieces. Press Z or X (NES A/B buttons) to fire cannons in combat and to rotate wall blocks during the repair phase. Use Enter to start or pause the game.
Tips
- Prioritize sinking red enemy ships first, as they move continuously and bombard your walls relentlessly.
- Build compactly around your castles. Enclosing a smaller, tighter space requires fewer blocks and creates room to place extra cannons.
- If a wall is heavily damaged, don’t waste time patching individual holes; it is often faster to build a brand new perimeter wall behind the rubble.
