Released in 1987 for the NES (ported by Hudson Soft from Will Wright’s original Commodore 64 design), Raid on Bungeling Bay is a multi-directional scrolling shooter that puts you in the cockpit of a combat helicopter. Your mission is to navigate a sprawling, looping archipelago to systematically destroy the six war factories of the Bungeling Empire while managing your limited payload and fending off an escalating military response.
How to play
You pilot your helicopter using rotational “tank” controls: push Up on the arrow keys to accelerate forward and Left/Right to rotate. The Z key (A button) fires your machine gun against fighters and boats, while the X key (B button) drops bombs on ground targets like factories. You can only carry up to nine bombs at once, and a factory requires several hits to destroy, meaning you must repeatedly return to your aircraft carrier to rearm and repair damage.
Tips
- Protect your carrier: Your aircraft carrier is your only source for repairs. If you receive an alert that it is under attack, drop what you are doing and return to defend it immediately.
- Pace your strikes: The enemy’s defenses scale up as you destroy more factories. Focus on taking them out one at a time rather than damaging multiple facilities at once.
- Mind your damage: As your helicopter takes hits, its controls will become increasingly sluggish. Don’t wait until your damage meter is critical before retreating to the carrier.
