Phaser Patrol is a first-person space combat simulator developed by Starpath for the Atari 2600 in 1982. Originally bundled with the Starpath Supercharger add-on, it pushes the console’s limits to deliver an ambitious experience similar to Star Raiders. Players pilot a starfighter to defend the galaxy from Draconian invaders, balancing fast-paced combat against the careful management of energy reserves and ship damage across a grid of space sectors.
How to play
Your objective is to clear the sector map of all Draconian fleets before they can destroy your starbases. Use the arrow keys to steer your ship and the Spacebar to fire your phasers. You can toggle the sector map by pressing F2 (the console’s Black/White switch), which allows you to view enemy movements and warp between quadrants. Keep a close eye on your systems panel at the bottom of the screen; if you run low on energy or take critical damage, you must navigate to a starbase to repair and refuel.
Tips
- Monitor your energy levels closely. Moving, firing, and taking hits all drain your reserves, so avoid wasteful shooting and warp to a starbase before you run completely dry.
- Draconian fighters often attack in pairs. Use the radar display at the bottom of the screen to track their positions and align your ship before they enter your main viewport.
- Prioritize sectors where starbases are under attack. Losing a base removes a safe haven for repairs and makes completing the campaign much more difficult.
