Developed by Konami and released in 1990 for the NES, Parodius Da! is a brilliant and bizarre shoot ’em up that parodies the classic Gradius series. Instead of a serious sci-fi setting, you pilot absurd characters like a penguin, an octopus, or the Vic Viper through colorful, ridiculous stages. It takes the power-up meter system of its source material and wraps it in a surreal, comedic package that still delivers a genuinely challenging arcade shooter experience.
How to Play
Your goal is to survive waves of bizarre enemies and defeat eccentric bosses at the end of each stage. Collect capsules dropped by red enemies to advance your power-up meter at the bottom of the screen, and activate it to gain speed, missiles, lasers, or shields. In the browser, use the Arrow Keys to move, Z/X to shoot or activate power-ups, and Enter to start the game.
Tips
- Focus on collecting capsules to activate the “Option” power-up early, as having extra pods mimicking your attacks makes surviving much easier.
- Don’t blindly activate every power-up; sometimes a shield or laser is more valuable than maxing out your movement speed, which can make dodging too twitchy.
- Watch out for the bellsโshooting them changes their color, granting special temporary effects like a megaphone attack or invincibility.
