Game description:

Ninja Gaiden is Tecmo’s 1988 NES action platformer starring Ryu Hayabusa, a ninja who travels from Japan to America to avenge his father’s death. What distinguished it at release were its anime-style cinematic cutscenes — illustrated story sequences between acts that were unlike anything else on the console. The gameplay is fast-paced and deliberately difficult, demanding precise jumps and sword strikes across six acts where enemy placement is designed to punish careless play.

How to play

Move Ryu with the arrow keys. Press X to jump — he can leap to walls and cling to them, then jump again to change direction or gain height. Press Z to swing his sword, or to use a secondary ninja art if one is selected. Hit Shift to cycle through collected ninja arts; each use costs Ki shown in the HUD. Press Enter to pause.

Tips

  • Use the walls. Ryu grabs any vertical surface automatically when he jumps toward it. Wall-jumping is essential in later levels for dodging enemies and clearing difficult gaps.
  • Windmill Throwing Stars are the most versatile secondary weapon — they travel horizontally and can hit multiple enemies, making them effective against bosses and aerial threats alike.
  • Never backtrack. Enemies respawn when you move left. Commit to advancing right; retreating undoes the ground you already cleared.
