Niji no Silk Road (also known as Rainbow Silkroad) is a unique mercantile role-playing game released for the NES (Famicom) in 1991. Instead of standard level-grinding, this RPG focuses heavily on trading goods across Asia to build wealth. You play as an exiled prince aiming to reclaim his throne by travelling the Silk Road to collect the shards of the Rainbow Mirror. This version includes a full English fan translation so you can play it directly in your browser.
How to Play
In Niji no Silk Road, you do not earn money or experience points from fighting monsters. Instead, you earn money by buying goods in one town and selling them in another where demand is higher. Winning battles awards License Points, which allow you to trade in new regions. To control the game, use the Arrow Keys to move, Z for the A button, X for the B button, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Gameplay Tips
- Trade constantly: Since you don’t get gold from enemies, always check the market prices and transport goods to towns where they sell for a profit.
- Manage your water: Keep an eye on your water supply when crossing the desert; running out of water will result in a game over.
- Fight for licenses: Engage in battles when you need License Points to access higher-tier trading regions.
